about

In October 2013, we went into a studio deep in the beautiful Dutch countryside and recorded our debut album: “A Golden Age” .

Before the band set to work on these new compositions and arrangements, we asked ourselves two simple questions: "What would we like to say? And why should the music be interesting for listeners?"

The music we investigated while searching for material changed our view of modern society. We realized that younger generations have, unfortunately, lost touch with the heritage of great nations such as Germany, France, Italy and Russia. Year by year, fewer and fewer people remember the names of cultural heroes of these countries and that golden age.

We have felt this loss ourselves and this album is our attempt to redress the balance. We delved deep into the 19th century for inspiration. The Russians are especially important to Kirill. And we also explore Messiaen, a titan of twentieth century music.

Since we come from diverse countries—Russia, Ukraine, Holland and South Korea—we are even more aware of the personal cultural background that each of us carries around in him. In the time we shared together recording the album, we talked about what was important to us in music and this conversation carried over instrumentally into the studio, too.

So what do we want to say? We want to honour the past but transform it through our experience in the present. We want to remove the music that inspired us from a single political context or point in history and focus only on its beauty. The beauty of lush harmony, intricate rhythms, and singable melodies. And the beauty of a group sound and interplay.

And why should that interest you as a listener? Music makes us breathe, gives us a source of inspiration and educates us. Art—and music in particular, we feel—is stronger than anything else, crossing boundaries of time and space. In short, music unites us. We hope you will feel this spirit coming through as you listen and share this journey with us.

***
This ''journey'' features new takes on Russian romantic music of the 19th century and also original compositions of guitarist Kirill Yakovlev.

It's very close to our hearts for the following reasons:
1. The musical ideas come from, or are inspired by, composers of the Romantic era and are played in a fresh and personal way. The 19th century was, of course, a ‘’giant step’’ in all spheres of human activity. We want to capture our view on that harmonious period from a different perspective. This is our way of paying homage to our roots.

2. We have enjoyed creating a unified work that's rich in contrasts, featuring many different moods and genres such as world music, cuban son, free jazz, blues, ballads and contemporary music. We hope you'll agree we've conjured a special sound world.

3. We think we have transcended a modern jazz obsession with virtuosity, or 'burning', to focus on melody: it’s not about ego, it’s all about music.
