All southern ports have always had trade and cultural relations not only with Asia and the Mediterranean, but also with Latin America. I have always been curious to explore the history of music not only looking into what has been written, but also thinking about what could have happened, but didn’t...

I have always considered the ‘Almendra’ to be one of the key songs in Cuban music. This is the danzón that gave birth to most major dance rhythms including mambo, cha-cha-cha, and, later, salsa. It is a well-known fact that danzón itself was born in Cuba, when it emerged from a mix of French contredance with African rhythms.

The arrangement here is a 3/4 mexican ‘mariachi’ pattern with roots going back to traditional Russian ‘chanson‘ or dance melodies.

While working on this song, we have slightly changed the rhythmic structure and lowered the pace. The result was a folk melody that could have easily been written somewhere in the Russian Empire in the end of the 19th century. Unfortunately, that never happened due to the Empire’s collapse and the arrival of the new government. Although, I have been able to find a similar folk melody in 3/4 among the works of Mikhail Glinka.
